BSAA Founder Susan Mumford recalls a story from her days as a Soho (London) gallerist, in the height of the Great Recession (2008-10):
"As a small business owner in the arts, I was paying attention to what was happening, on a local, national and international level. A D'Arblay street neighbour was Sir Tom Baker, who specialises in traditional and avant-garde tailoring. (I'll never forget the time that there appeared to be dozens of 1970s rockstars hanging out at his place.) The story goes that his business improved during the recession, as many people decided to buy one high quality suit, rather than spend more £ on a number of cheap suits that wouldn't last.
So when it comes to MAKING IT in the arts, including putting together key funds for projects, you too can tap into having a quality offering, as well as enabling people to support good causes - yes, YOU. People know that the arts are not only important, they're essential - and are keen to make a difference during times of need for the sector. The opportunities are out there, providing YOU go out and make them happen!"
We're kicking off our summer programming by addressing how you can successfully make your planned projects happen, from a fundraising perspective. We'll be welcoming Kane Moore, Head of Development at the Scarfree Foundation, also formerly Head of Development at the Battersea Arts Centre.
The talk will start with a dialogue between Kane and Susan Mumford, who will address a plethora of fundraising tools, strategies and pro tips, all with a focus of giving you key insight to help with your own fundraising endeavours.
The following areas will be addressed in this facilitated conversation, which will be followed by an open Q&A with the audience:
✅ What to consider when putting together your budget (a necessity!);
✅ How to research funding opportunities (including clarifying your own mission and values, to align with potential funders);
✅ Understanding grant opportunities and family funds that are relevant today (this will include specifics on types of projects being supported and developing relationships with funders);
✅ Identifying corporate & private sponsorship opportunities (cash and in-kind alike) applicable for individual artists, curators and small gallery operations;
✅ Why creatives are ideally placed for crowdfunding, including what you need to know and do to have publicly successful campaigns; and
✅ What funders (across the board, from family funds to crowdfunding supporters) want to know about YOU.
