#besmartaboutart networking is a monthly opportunity to meet artists, curators & other art world peers, view exhibitions and spaces, and expand knowledge – creative and professional alike!

In May, Be Smart About Art visits The Library Members’ Club for a private tour of the Chapter Ten Exhibition.  This group show brings together works by artists featured in the current BBC series The Big Painting Challenge. The tour will be led by Bokani, a professional artist and BSAA Member who won the public vote in the first week of the series and will provide insight into how the artists were chosen and worked during the filming process.

This exhibition showcases work created by the artists, away from the BBC cameras and without that time pressure. These paintings have not been seen on TV and yet share new skills the artists picked up during the TV bootcamp.

Exhibiting artists: Bokani Tshidzu Callum Stephen Chris Davies Tilly Farnham Jane Voss Oliver Freeston Surjit Kalirai Susan Farrel

About Bokani:

Her creative technique involves urgent, gestural movements, exploring and responding to colours as they interact on the canvas. She believes in the integrity, freedom and honesty of abstract painting. Bokani has developed a method over several years of creating rational patterns that lead the viewers’ eye across the paintings, reminiscent of the dancing African printed cloths of her childhood.

Bokani Tshidzu was born in Zimbabwe and moved to England as a teenager. She studied Politics with Economics at the University of Bath and is living and working in Bow, London’s East End. Painting has empowered her to move past the childhood loss of both parents to resolve questions of global female identity, black African heritage and belonging. Her work has been exhibited across the UK and has been acquired by numerous collectors in London.

Bokani is a contestant in the BBC 1 series The Big Painting Challenge, and won the public vote.

About the BBC series The Big Painting Challenge

Ten artists with a passion for painting are given intensive tuition by mentors, including visual artist and curator Diana Ali and artist as well as designer Pascal Anson. From the Cotswolds to Glasgow, each of the six episodes takes place at a different location and follows a different genre to teach and test the artists in equal measure.

Once the instruction is complete, the artists are tasked to create a painting that is shown to members of the public who are able to give their favourite the all-important pass through to the next episode. The rest have to face the BBC’s formidable judges, including portrait artist Daphne Todd OBE and Lachlan Goudie, a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. It is the judges who make the ultimate pronouncement for which artists are sent home.

At the end of the six-week artistic bootcamp, the judges choose the artist to crown winner of The Big Painting Challenge.

Presenters: Mariella Frostrup and Rev Richard Coles
Judges: Daphne Todd OBE and Lachlan Goudie
Mentors: Visual artist and curator Diana Ali and artist and designer Pascal Anson
