Do you ever find yourself wondering how works of art that are in a show, in the store at an art prize location or in transit are doing? Have you – or someone else on your behalf, packed them well enough? Might pieces be getting damaged or worse, destroyed? Will that precious gallery consignment arrive both intact and on time…and what will you do if it doesn’t? Are such practical concerns hindering your artistic ambition?
Panelists include Katie Spragg, an artist working in (often fragile) three dimensions, Laura Uccello, an art shipper & handler and Adam Prideaux, an art insurer. The moderator is Susan J Mumford, art business specialist and entrepreneur.
With a talk designed to provide practical insights and know-how from some of the best, our intention is to help attendees sleep better, understanding what’s at risk and helping you to understand how to do what you can to protect art and business interests alike.
This talk is suitable for artists and curators from emerging right through to and including mid-career, for this topic is continually evolving with changes to legislation, taxation and more.
The discussion will cover the following points and more:
- Hearing real-life case studies from each panelist that demonstrate the importance of evaluating risk before it’s too late, which also provide insight into packing, transporting and protecting art. Some stories can be hair-raising yet informative at the same time! (In our experience, talks about insurance and shipping are surprisingly exciting and enlightening, owing to the stories told.)
- Creative vision: How to weigh up ambitious concepts versus practical concerns… and understanding when to compromise (or not).
- Taking risks – trial and error (based on speakers’ experiences).
- Top tips on transporting, installing and protecting works of art. This also includes basics on associated paperwork.
- Understanding the intricacies and risks of showing fine art on and beyond the white walls and plinths of corporate collections and public art galleries.
- The impacts of busy exhibition environments such as art fairs or trade shows on the way you install and protect works of art.
- Learning about consignment notes, risk registers and other forms of documentation – for one-person and small creative enterprises who are time poor.
A Q&A session with the audience will follow the facilitated conversation.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:
Adam Prideaux is the CEO and Managing Director of Hallett Independent. As well as arranging insurances and settling claims for art dealers, galleries, museums and private collectors, he also advises them on risk management strategies to maximise cover for the lowest premium, whilst reducing their administrative costs.
With considerable experience in art insurance, Adam lectures regularly to galleries. He has also co-authored the Guide to Museum and Gallery Insurance published by the Museums, Archives and Libraries Council (MLA) and the Association of Independent Museums’ (AIM) Focus Paper: Risk Management and Museums.
Adam started his career at Spink Fine Art in 1986 and has maintained very close contact with the art world ever since. He is passionate about galleries and was closely involved in the setting up and running of Limoncello Gallery, which ran for 10 years until last year. As an insurance broker he has a unique insight into the operations of galleries and the challenges that they face.
He is a Trustee of the South London Gallery and is a patron of Tate, the Chisenhale Gallery, Nottingham Contemporary, Studio Voltaire and the Showroom.
Katie combines clay with a range of processes including animation, illustration and installation to create work that aims to arouse curiosity. Whether through sharing a story or conjuring a collective memory, her practice highlights the forgotten sources of joy and amusement that surround us. Her latest body of work seeks to remind us of the wonder of being outside in nature.
Katie Spragg is based in London, UK, she graduated with first class honours from BA 3D Materials Practice at Brighton University in 2010 before completing and an MA Ceramics & Glass at the Royal College of Art in 2016. She has exhibited, held residencies and taught ceramics at institutions both nationally and internationally – including South Korea, Denmark and Germany. Recent achievements include the acquisition of her piece Hedgerow by the Victoria and Albert Museum, shortlisted for the British Ceramics Biennale AWARD show, Her first solo show at Blackwell, the Arts and Crafts House in 2018 as well as two digital works exhibited to coincide with the exhibition of Monet’s Haystacks: Snow Effect at Abbot Hall Gallery, Kendal, her animations featured in the British Crafts Council’s touring film festival Real to Reel, commissioned to run a project for the TATE Exchange programme as a member of the collective Collective Matter, being twice selected for the Charlotte Fraser Award during her time at the RCA.
Laura is the Business Development Manager for leading fine art logistics provider Momentous. She has vast experience in Collection Management and Strategic Partnerships within London and New York. She has advised private and institutional collections on best practices in the fields of transport, storage and conservation. In 2015, she received her MSc in Art, Law and Business from Christie’s Education-University of Glasgow.
SUSAN J MUMFORD
A game-changer in the 21st Century art world, Susan's an entrepreneur, mentor, speaker, moderator and author. Her first foray into supporting industry professionals was in the form of the Association of Women Art Dealers (AWAD), which she established in 2010 while running a gallery in Soho, London. This was followed by the launch of Be Smart About Art, an online-accessible professional development platform that helps creative professionals thrive in a changing world. In late 2015, her first book was published in the name of BSAA's motto: `'Art is your life. Make it your living." While based in London, Susan spends notable periods around the UK and also in the USA and Continental Europe, delivering workshops and keynotes, mentoring creative professionals, facilitating panel discussions, judging art prizes and more.
