Be Smart About Art

Ryan Stanier

Ryan Stanier attended Kingston Business School, studying business and law. Following a career working with major corporations including O2, Sky, Virgin Atlantic and London Fashion Week, he made an introduction into the art world in early 2010 with the launch of Artbeat – a commercial gallery space in Covent Garden dedicated to the promotion of emerging artists.

Ryan went in search of London’s most talented young artists, building relationships at graduate shows and studio visits. Artbeat was an opportunity for these up and coming artists to increase their profile and sell their work in a prime, central London, location. In 2011, he also produced several off-shoots of the Artbeat gallery with temporary pop up spaces at both London Fashion Week and the Hampton Court House Festival.

Through this venture, it became clear that there were many emerging artists who were struggling to sell work without the support of a gallery therefore it seemed nonsensical that, as a city, we were producing some of the most exciting creative minds, and yet it was becoming more and more difficult for them to gain recognition.

The success of Artbeat led to bigger aspirations and in November 2011 Ryan launched The Other Art Fair. A standalone fair that differed from its contemporaries, it was a place for artists to sell work directly to both established and first time buyers as well as to gain exposure to galleries. It was also an opportunity for visitors to gain unprecedented access to the best undiscovered artists.

At the inaugural launch in November 2011, the fair showcased the work of 80 of the UK’s best unrepresented artists. Hosted at the Bargehouse on the South Bank, it was a great success, attracting 4,300 visitors, including the attendance of major galleries Blain Southern, Gagosian, Saatchi, Rosenfeld Porcini, plus many more, over three days. the most recent fair during Frieze Week was held at the Truman Brewery and it received an overwhelming response of over 500 applications from artists, the selection committee chose the best 100 to show their work, to an audience that reached just over 12,000.

In addition Ryan runs a lecture series to assist in the business practice of unrepresented artists. He was on the selection committee for British Female Artist of the Year 2012, Free Range Art Prize 2013 and Signature Art Prize 2013.
